Wilsons fame surpassed that of the United States during 2014, when she landed a role as a character on Showtimes The Affair. In this show, Wilson was Alison Lockhart who is a young, troubled girl from a dark background. Lockhart is a lover of an unmarried Noah Solloway. Wilson was awarded an Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series in Drama 2015, along with Mauratierney and Joshua Jackson. Wilson stated in British Vogue: "I love the fact that I am able to play characters from two angles." Noah sees Alison as a confident sexy version. But she sees herself a totally different way which from the inside is dowdy and hidden in shadows, unwilling to make a statement. She said: I think America is now so moral, and so judgemental that events on this show are shocking. Wilson quit the show in 2018 to many fans' surprise, however she wasn't clear on the details. In an interview in August of 2018 on CBS This Morning, Wilson admitted that she had a desire to quit the show, but wasn't allowed to explain the reasons behind her departure. Wilson recently changed her attention to the world of film. In 2016 she starred in the film horror I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House as well as in the year 2017 she played the cryptic character PT Stella in the sci-fi rom com How to Talk to Girls at Parties. In order to add more horror films to the list of credits she has her upcoming film will feature a British film adaptation of The Little Stranger. This supernatural thriller is based off the novel by Sarah Waters. Wilson is the executive producer of The film.
